Man Utd’s Nunez problem
Erik ten Hag faces growing transfer frustration as Manchester United fear they could be left out of a summer move for Darwin Nunez.
Ten Hag has already started work as United’s new manager in a bid to turn the club around after a nightmarish 2021-22 season, with the Red Devils finishing sixth in the Premier League and finding themselves without a trophy for the fifth consecutive year. The Glazers have appointed former Ajax manager Ten Hag in a bid to implement bold changes, with the Dutchman tasked with revamping the club’s style of play while rebuilding a squad which will undergo drastic changes this summer.
Benfica striker Nunez is one of Ten Hag’s top targets to bolster United’s attacking options, although the Uruguayan doesn’t come cheap. United’s summer budget has been hit by the lack of Champions League football and, as the Daily Star first reports, Benfica have now told United it will cost around £100m to bring Nunez to Old Trafford. Such a fee would make the 22-year-old Nunez the most expensive signing in British football history alongside Jack Grealish, who left Aston Villa for Manchester City for a nine-figure sum a year ago.
