Romero’s time in Manchester
Romero joined Manchester United in 2015 alongside Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin and Radamel Falcao and played over 60 games before being released in 2021. The Argentina international kept 38 clean sheets in 59 games, while conceding 26 goals.
He started the Europa League final in 2017, which the Red Devils managed to win by beating Ajax under manager Jose Mourinho; it was also the last time they won a silverware major.
Romero left the club after being allegedly ‘frozen’ by former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Argentine was dropped for the 2020 Europa League semi-final against Sevilla which he eventually lost.
His last appearance for the club was against FC Copenhagen in the 2020 Europa League quarter-final. His failed move to Everton on transfer deadline day when his wife took to Instagram to voice her concerns.
The former World Cup finalist was forced to train on his own after falling down the pecking order behind de Gea and Dean Henderson.
Despite this, a source close to the player told the Manchester Evening News that he still has a lot of love for the club and would always come back if given the chance.

Does a return to Manchester United make sense?
Manchester United have reportedly finalized a deal for Feyenoord full-back Tyrell Malacia and are looking to bring in Frenkie De Jong and Christian Eriksen from Barcelona and Brentford respectively.
Dean Henderson’s impending exit could open the door for Romero’s return to Old Trafford, with the assistant keeper role once again becoming open. Tom Heaton is currently the only option behind De Gea which means Erik Ten Hag could use Romero to provide good and healthy competition.
Moreover, this deal could be sorted quickly and the club can move forward to finalize the other deals.
