West Ham vs Everton, Sunday 2pm, live on Sky Sports
Regular readers will know that I have been keen to face West Ham in recent weeks due to their lack of depth, over-reliance on Michail Antonio and the busy Europa League schedule.
Not this weekend, however. West Ham seems a huge price to me at 3/4 with Sky Bet.
Antonio has had a full week to cool off ahead of a big week for the Hammers which will see them face Lyon at the London Stadium on Thursday. He is expected to be at full throttle here, having been left out of the Jamaican squad during the international break.
Antonio’s impact when well-rested for West Ham is gigantic.
In the last 22 occasions when Antonio has had a rest period of seven days or more between games, West Ham have won 17 games, losing just two. Those defeats were a completely understandable defeat at Manchester City and a 3-2 home loss to Southampton on Boxing Day where Antonio scored and the Hammers won the expected goalscoring battle in a positive performance.
The last time Antonio was granted time off and missed the meeting with Jamacia was in September, which later coincided with a four-game winning streak for West Ham, which included victories over Tottenham and Liverpool .
Moreover, Antonio’s personal best after a break seems to be climbing. During those 22 aforementioned games, the striker has racked up 18 goals (10 goals, eight assists), suggesting that his level of performance is increasing after being able to rest his overworked limbs.
It takes a well-organized and disciplined team defensively to cause David Moyes’s side problems, which Everton haven’t, and I expect a dominant performance from the Hammers, with Antonio in the lead.
Everton are crumbling defensively under minimal pressure and lack the backbone to pick up points away from home in the Premier League. They have the worst away record in the Premier League, with just six points from 13 games, the only win at Brighton. They are winless in 11 away Premier League games, taking just two points from 33 available.
Frank Lampard hasn’t helped matters either in terms of his defensive structure on the road, conceding 14 goals in his four away games in charge in all competitions. Moyes will have noted that nine of those goals came from crosses inside the Everton penalty area. West Ham have scored 13 goals from crosses this season – no team has scored more this way. Antonio will be licking his lips at the end of his 10-game Premier League drought.
SCORE PREDICTION: 3-0 | BETTING ANGLE: Michail Antonio will score first (11/2 with Sky Bet – Bet Here!
JONES KNOWS THE BEST BET: Michail Antonio will score and West Ham will win (11/4 with Sky Bet – Bet Here!)
Tottenham vs Newcastle, Sunday 4.30pm, live on Sky Sports
Tottenham know a two-goal win will put them in the top four before Arsenal take on Crystal Palace on Monday Night Football. It would be the first time the club have featured in the top four in the final two months of a season since finishing fourth in the 18/19 campaign.
He’s had bumps in the road, but Antonio Conte is showing why he’s one of the best operators in world football. Spurs are proving difficult to score and deadly in attack. It’s a simple combination that should bring them closer to the top three next season once Conte adds more quality to the understrength areas of his starting XI.
Spurs have taken 21 points from 12 games in 2022 – only Liverpool (28) have taken more points this calendar year. And while Newcastle are a tougher nut to crack these days, they are still quite a ways away from being able to compete with a better Premier League side on the road.
I want Spurs to win quite comfortably and Sergio Reguilon to score. The Spaniard doesn’t seem to have Conte’s confidence just yet, but he’s managed to force his way sideways into the left-back slot, giving this player plenty of license to join in the attacks.
In his last two starts, he had five shots, two of which were on targets, which generated an expected goals count of 0.74. In a home game against a team they are 1/2 with Sky Bet to beat, his anytime goalscoring odds of 6/1 are simply too great to pass up.
SCORE PREDICTION: 2-0 | BETTING ANGLE: Sergio Reguilon to score (6/1 with Sky Bet – Bet Here!)
Crystal Palace vs Arsenal, Monday 8pm, live on Sky Sports
Since the Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White and Gabriel axis was formed four games into the season, Arsenal have scored 14 first-half goals in their last 11 Premier League away matches. Only Liverpool have scored more – and this despite the Gunners playing two games less than the majority of their rivals.
Mikel Arteta instructs his side to play aggressively from the start and it shows in 11 of their 14 first-half away goals before the 30th minute. It is most marked during this period when evaluating away games, with Liverpool.
Arsenal have won their last five away games in the Premier League, scoring 14 goals and leading on the break in their last six – the only blow being a second-half collapse at Everton.
Palace are tough at home but tend to get off to a very slow start in games. They failed to score in the first half in 10 of their 15 home matches, including against Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea. It all adds up that Arsenal were leading at the break at 13/8 with Sky Bet looking like a solid game.
Whether they can hold on and stay in pole position to finish in a Champions League place will all depend on whether they can see the game through in the second half. I have Faith.
