Arsenal’s top four prospects have taken a cruel blow in recent weeks, with Kieran Tierney set to miss the remainder of the campaign through injury and Takehiro Tomiyasu and Thomas Partey also out. Nuno Tavares has yet to convince since joining in the summer, and Granit Xhaka failed to flatter in an unnatural left-back role on Saturday.

But having spent more money than any other Premier League club this summer and not having the distraction of European football this season, Arteta would be under fire if Arsenal failed to seal fourth place. They trail Tottenham by three points but are one game short of their local rivals, and derby day is yet to come.
