Moneyball genius Billy Beane and private equity firm RedBird plan to buy Abramovich’s club

MONEYBALL genius Billy Beane is part of a company that plans to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.

The 59-year-old American made a name for himself as a baseball player before turning to business where he used his famous “Moneyball” approach as general manager of Major League Baseball’s Oakland A’s.

He is now an executive with the Oakland A baseball team.

And according to ESPN, he has teamed up with US investment firm RedBird Capital Partners led by Gerry Cardinale to form RedBall Acquisition Corp.

The company would be the first-ever sports-focused special purpose acquisition company.

If they are successful in acquiring the club from Abramovich, their vision is believed to be to create a business “that complements the expertise of the management team and will benefit from their strategic and hands-on operational leadership”.

Michael Rubin, owner of sporting goods group Fanatics, is also interested in applying for the club.

Abramovich put Chelsea on the market for £3billion after 19 years as club owner.

And it was reported earlier this week that Todd Boehly, co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and LA Lakers, was in touch with Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss about a potential offer.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, reports said Abramovich had flown on a private jet to Turkey earlier this week to potentially discuss the sale with Turkish billionaire Muhsin Bayrak.

The £48.7million 2019 Gulfstream G650ER luxury jet – one of six in its fleet – took off from Moscow and briefly landed in Istanbul before heading to the Turkish capital Ankara.

Bayrak claims he has been locked in negotiations with Abramovich over buying the Premier League club and insists he is ‘in the negotiation phase for signings’.

He told Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak: “We are negotiating the terms of the Chelsea purchase with Roman Abramovich’s lawyers.

“We are in the negotiation phase for signatures. We will soon fly the Turkish flag in London.

“We made our offer. Due to the war with Russia and Ukraine in the world. Because they find Turkey safe, they want to get most of the after-sales money in Turkey. We plan to sign soon.
