Speaking on the Match of the Day Top 10 podcast, Micah Richards discussed Mohamed Salah and his contract situation.
The Egyptian is entering the final year of his contract and the Reds have a big decision to make over the winger’s future.
Salah has made no secret that he would like to stay at Liverpool but, as you can imagine, he wants a lot of money.
With Salah entering his thirties, there are of course concerns about a potential decline in the coming years, but according to Richards, Salah can maintain his form into his thirties in the same way as Cristiano Ronaldo.
What was said?
Richards talked about Salah.
“It is imperative that Liverpool sign his contract. I know they have Diaz who is quality, Firmino and Jota. I’m not one to tell him to give him what he wants, but they have to. Because he can score at any time,” Richards said.
“How old is Salah now?” He is 30 years old ? so there is a decision to be made on your salary structure,” Lineker said.
“Yeah, but look at Ronaldo, he always scores hat-tricks and what is he? 37. If you enroll him at 30, he could do it another four years, definitely,” Richards said.
It’s all well and good to give the example of Cristiano Ronaldo, but the reality is that the Portuguese star is the exception, not the rule.
The sad reality is that for every Ronaldo there are several players who decline in their early thirties, look at Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Alexis Sanchez and even former Liverpool star Fernando Torres.
Salah’s form this season is certainly worth the money, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be the same player two or three years from now.
Liverpool’s decision is difficult to make.
