Manchester United plan to pay Anthony Martial to leave

Anthony Martial is now the riddle Manchester United would have no desire to solve.

Despite the lack of striker options in 2022 once Edinson Cavani leaves, Martial is unlikely to play a role.

United are plotting a drastic solution to take the big-money earner Martial off the books.

The Sun reports that United are ready to pay Martial a lump sum of £12m to leave the club.

Your club’s SURPRISE star this season

Martial is on exorbitant wages at United of almost £250,000 a week.

He would be entitled to £25million from United over the final two years of his contract until 2024.

So, the Frenchman could stubbornly sit back and get the money he signed up for whether he’s involved in the first team or not.

United are hoping to save some money by convincing Martial to accept a payment and take half of what he is entitled to.

A similar tactic worked to get Alexis Sanchez off the books.

Clubs are going to be deterred from buying Martial because of his salary. No club will match United’s wages.

But he should be interested in playing football and getting his career back on track, after a frustrating two years.

United can still get a transfer fee, to potentially offset his salary payment. But without Martial agreeing to take a pay cut or payment, there is simply no transfer fee, and he would remain a problem on the club’s books.

Martial scored 23 goals in 2019/20 but has scored just nine goals in the two seasons since, including just one while on loan at Sevilla.

His loan spell hasn’t exactly put him on display, and United have a tough job offloading him, so he’s forced to seek drastic solutions.

This week we’ve named Martial one of United’s seven hardest-to-sell players.

The Sun reports that Martial is unwilling to return to Manchester which should work in United’s favour.

New boss Erik ten Hag may want to see it, but when he looks at the footage, he may have seen enough.

United’s proposed option to move Martial will be on the table, to hopefully convince him to accept any offer that comes along.
