Manchester United beat Barcelona for Sergio Reguilon

Manchester United are said to be competing with Barcelona in the race to sign Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Sergio Reguilon could leave Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window with Antonio Conte deeming him surplus to requirements. Barcelona and Manchester United will be vying for the signing of the former Real Madrid defender.

Sergio Reguilon spent most of his formative years with Real Madrid but never managed to gain a foothold in the first-team setup at the Santiago Bernabeu when he turned professional. While the 25-year-old enjoyed a strong 2018/19 campaign, Zinedine Zidane decided to ship him on loan to Sevilla for the 2019/20 campaign.

Upon his return to the Bernabeu, Real Madrid sold him to Tottenham Hotspur in September 2020. But the Spaniard failed to progress at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, scoring two goals and three assists in 31 appearances this season. And it looks like Antonio Conte’s frustrations have boiled over, with Spurs set to offload him this summer. Barcelona or Manchester United could be Reguilon’s next destination.

Barcelona will have to invest in a left-back in the summer transfer window due to Jordi Alba’s years of promotion and Alejandro Balde’s inability to gain a foothold in the first-team setup. As a result, several left-backs have emerged on Barcelona’s radar, including Reguilon, who can be a solid long-term fit in the job.

As for Manchester United, drastic changes could be in order following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their new manager. The new head coach will look to mold the team in his image, and the signing of a left-back could be on the cards amid inconsistencies from Luke Shaw and Alex Telles.

Reguilon thus became a viable target for Manchester United, who tried to sign him in 2020 before targeting Alex Telles instead. Apart from Barcelona and Manchester United, the Tottenham defender is also a target for Juventus ahead of the summer transfer window.
