Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez appeals to Elon Musk on Twitter

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez has asked Elon Musk to restore his blue tick on Twitter after his mysterious disappearance.

Mahrez, 31, has more than three million Twitter followers but has lost his blue check mark, which informs users if an account’s owner has been properly verified.

Following news of Musk’s expected takeover of Twitter, Mahrez appealed to the billionaire to restore functionality to his account.

“Bro @elonmusk give me back my blue tick,” Mahrez tweeted, followed by three crying and laughing emojis.

Fans of rival clubs used Mahrez’s request to mock Manchester City.

“Same blue ticks as UCLs,” wrote one user.

Another added: “Imagine him saying he won’t give you back until you fill up your stadium.”

Musk, the world’s richest person with an estimated net worth of $273.6bn (£218.8bn), launched his shock takeover bid earlier this month.

Twitter’s board has accepted its $44bn (£34.5bn) takeover bid, with shareholders now expected to vote on the proposed deal.

Musk has pledged to unlock the company’s “enormous potential” if its takeover is approved.

“Free speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital public square where issues vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Musk said in a statement announcing the deal.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating spambots, and authenticating all humans,” he added.

“Twitter has enormous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the user community to unlock it.”

It remains to be seen whether Musk’s expected takeover will allow Mahrez to reclaim his blue tick.
