Manchester United have been warned by ex-striker Louis Saha not to spend £100m on new players who could disrupt the club – instead he has been told to focus on quality rather than big stars.
United have spent big in recent years on big names such as Jadon Sancho, Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku. Sancho and Maguire have largely failed to justify their huge transfer fees since their moves, while Pogba is set to leave on a free transfer this summer and Lukaku has already had two different clubs since leaving in 2019.
The Red Devils haven’t won a major trophy since 2017 while five other English clubs have since then, which will worry United chief Richard Arnold. And Saha suggested the club need to rectify such a sterile spell by changing their strategy of going for big names – opting instead for quality over reputation to ‘stop worrying about being left behind’ by other clubs.
“Man United need to make the right choices and sign the right players for the club,” Saha told Boyle Sports. “It’s very important not to panic, those responsible for the signings have to make sure that the philosophies of the club are right and that the players who come through the door are buying into the project.
“It doesn’t matter how much you spend, it’s about quality. You don’t need to spend £100m on a player who’s going to disrupt your club. They don’t need to worry about being left behind by their Obviously big teams are going to attract big names, but every team has issues they have to deal with and United shouldn’t press the panic button.”
One of United’s big names is Bruno Fernandes, with the Portuguese star being one of their main stars in recent seasons since his move two and a half years ago. The midfielder struggled somewhat last year after a superb first 18-month spell for United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But Saha has backed the maestro to return to the form he started showing at Old Trafford immediately after his £48million move from Sporting Lisbon. “Bruno Fernandes can be Man United’s main man next season, he definitely has the quality to do it,” Saha continued.
“I expected him to struggle a bit because his form when he arrived was exceptional. In some games last season, the fans saw that he was able to do incredible things, but doing it regularly is the challenge and while the club is always in transition and constantly changing it is never easy for the players Bruno is certainly one of the star players but a lot of players in the team need to improve their game by compared to last season because I think only Cristiano Ronaldo and David de Gea can escape criticism.
“Bruno works hard and fights even when he’s not playing well and he’s the kind of people who need to keep Man United going.” United are reportedly close to signing Frenkie de Jong, while Christian Eriksen, Jurrien Timber and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have also been linked with moves to the Theater of Dreams.
