MANCHESTER UNITED are looking to hijack Arsenal’s offer to land Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.
The Gunners have made a third offer for the Argentina centre-back – after learning their previous offer of £34million was not enough.
But United have now expressed an interest in the Dutch giants and asked to be kept informed of developments.
Erik ten Hag was planning to turn his attention to his forward line, now deals for Frenkie de Jong and Tyrrell Malacia have been put in place.
However, the Red Devils feared Martinez, 24, would head to north London unless they made their interest known soon.
Martinez has set his sights on a move to the Premier League – although the Dutch giants will demand around £43m to think about letting him go.
Arsenal’s opening bid of £26m was rejected – as was their second which was £8m more.
Their latest offer is a similar down payment but with more options – so that may not be enough to entice Ajax into business.
They are now likely to wait and see if a firm offer arrives for United’s Martinez.
He previously indicated he was happy to join Arsenal, but the prospect of reuniting with former boss Ten Hag at Old Trafford could change his mind.

It would be a blow for Mikel Arteta who has also seen Chelsea move in for another of their key targets, Raphinha, in recent days.
Spanish giants Barcelona are also in the hunt for the Brazilian who is valued at around £60m by his current club Leeds.
Meanwhile, United are happy with the progress of their move to Malacia – despite a late offer from Lyon to turn to them.
He is expected to move to the North West and compete with Luke Shaw next season.
This means United would listen to offers from Alex Telles and Brandon Williams who have played for them at left-back for the past two years.
Ten Hag remains committed to Ajax striker Antony – but the £70million-plus price tag is likely to be a big deal breaker.
