Man Utd have bullish belief in Lisandro Martinez they think Arsenal can’t match, as Ten Hag demand new offer

Manchester United believe Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez will suit their style of play better than Arsenal’s, according to a report.

Both Premier League clubs are in the hunt for a deal for the Argentina international and have already made significant progress. United went the furthest with an offer worth around £43m but they were rejected.

Arsenal are currently further back in the race after offering around £38m for Martinez.

However, their interest in the versatile defender may wane following a £5.9million bid for Benfica star Alex Grimaldo.

However, this did not make life any easier for Man Utd, who are still trying to agree a fee with Ajax for Martinez. The Eredivisie giants are under no pressure to sell the 24-year-old and then want as much profit as possible.

Talk to sky sports (10/07, 11.40am) transfer journalist Melissa Reddy has revealed that United – led by former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag – believe Martinez will suit them better than Arsenal. Reddy also gave an update on United’s pursuit of Ajax striker Antony.

“With Lisandro Martinez, the most remarkable thing is agreeing a fee with Ajax,” she said. “United are in advanced talks with Ajax and that’s a Arsenal also target.

“No decision has been made between Martinez and the two clubs as no agreement has been reached. The player cannot choose unless an assessment is met and the clubs have a basic agreement in place.

“The rhetoric around the United camp is that they are confident Martinez will join the club.”

Man Utd want Lisandro Martinez, Antony

“He’s a player Ten Hag knows exceptionally well,” Reddy added of Martinez. “They think United will play better to their strengths rather than Arsenal.

“With Antony, the new Ajax manager is desperate to keep him.

“The price quoted – around £70million – is not what United are willing to pay. They are apprehensive about this deal and reluctant to commit to this one.

While United’s highest bid for Martinez currently stands at £42 million, The temperature claims Ten Hag wants his club to increase their offer.

Brazilian star Antony is another player Ajax are under no pressure to sell. Ten Hag, however, is looking to rekindle ties with those he knows best to launch his tenure at Old Trafford.

United need signings through the door

The longer the wait drags on for United’s first statement signing, the more anxious fans will become.

In successive transfer windows, they have seen their club struggle to sign a striker. In the end, they previously settled for Odion Ighalo and Edinson Cavani, who weren’t standout successes.

As for the current transfer window, Man Utd had a chance to beat Liverpool to Benfica striker Darwin Nunez but they pulled out of a bidding war.

United favorites to sign Martinez

Arsenal and Manchester United are battling to sign much-loved Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez; his relationship with Erik Ten Hag could be key.

In defence, there remains a possibility that Arsenal could swoop in for Martinez, who they would see as ideal left-back cover.

But fans will feel United need to steer him away from Ajax to avoid fears of another grueling transfer window.
