Man City vs Sporting highlights and reaction as Gabriel Jesus strike disallowed and Scott Carson comes on

Manchester City safely negotiated their Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Sporting tonight thanks to a goalless draw at the Etihad.

City were endemic in Lisbon three weeks ago to register a 5-0 lead ahead of tonight’s second leg at the Etihad. The lead proved useful given the defensive problems Pep Guardiola suddenly had, with four key men ruled out.

Kyle Walker served Game 2 of a three-match suspension, while Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake remain out with injuries. Joao Cancelo is ill and therefore will not feature. That leaves Aleks Zinchenko, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones as City’s only available senior defenders.

Guardiola started Under-23 captain CJ Egan-Riley at right-back, while James McAtee and Luke Mbete were introduced in the second half, as was third-choice keeper Scott Carson. In terms of match action, Gabriel Jesus’ disallowed effort just after the break was the closest either side came to scoring as both looked comfortable sitting out.

Fernandinho praises the academy and comments on the future

Speaking to BT Sport, Fernandinho said:

“It’s important to keep playing well, especially after Sunday’s game against United. Some players come in, it’s important to buy a few minutes and get everyone going in the same direction.

“We played the same way we always play. Of course we didn’t have as many chances. We had one, offside, created more chances. Football is bad luck sometimes.”

On his 100th Champions League appearance:

“I’m so proud of that, so grateful to the two teams I’ve played for. A big achievement for me and I thank my team-mates.”

On the academy players:

“It shows the great job City are doing with the academy. They train with us every day, know exactly what they have to do. They felt really comfortable, I’m so happy for them, especially for CJ for making his Champions League. I hope they can play more often.”

On his performance and his future:

“I was fine. I’m so happy to play tonight and hopefully I can play more minutes. Who knows? [about his future] Only God knows.”

Full time

Thank goodness for that.

City progress to the quarter-finals in incredibly boring fashion, but it will be more than enough for Pep Guardiola. Probably.

Reaction to follow.

Sterling hits the side net

McAtee almost has a nice assist as he feeds Raheem Sterling to fire into the side netting.

John Stones encounters a corner and steers narrowly.

Not really necessary, is it?

Free kick Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez hits a free kick well, but it’s directly on the goalkeeper.

Luke Mbete arrives for his Champions League debut.

Riyad Mahrez has a deflected shot for a corner. This came after Islam Slimani moved closer to Sporting.

Madrid in the lead

As nothing is happening at the Etihad, I will continue to bring you updates from Real Madrid vs PSG.

Karim Benzema has scored his hat-trick and Madrid now lead 3-2!

79′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

To Madrid

Real Madrid turned the tables by scoring twice through Karim Benzema to level the aggregate score 2-2.

There are ten minutes left (plus overtime) in that one.

Carson is a popular introduction

‘England’s number one’, followed by ‘Carson, give us a wave’ comes from the stands.

Then a huge roar as Carson denied Paulinho one-on-one with a fine save. The two players collided and remained on the ground.

73′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

Change of city

Ederson is gone. Yes really.

Scott Carson makes his first appearance of the season.

More than 20 minutes…

Sporting fans have done Poznan, City fans have done Poznan, but we haven’t had any cause for excitement on the pitch yet.

Sporting are still trying but aren’t good enough to break through the Blues, while City appear to be stuck in neutral, rolling towards the finish. It was not entertaining.

great luck

Fernandinho splits the defense to pass Mahrez through, but his cross to Raheem Sterling is blocked for a corner.

60′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

How close City came to scoring

It was how close City came to scoring through Jesus. His shoulder was ruled slightly offside.

59′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

Edwards involved immediately

Marcus Edwards picks up Aleks Zinchenko and gets a decent shot, but it’s still relatively easy for Ederson to save.

59′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

Sports change

Former Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards is for the visitors. Pablo Sarabia is gone.

Meanwhile, Sporting fans are making Poznan as they are determined to enjoy their trip to Manchester.

“What c—— h— is that?” answer City fans.

57′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

Ederson collects

After 56 minutes, Sporting succeeded.

It takes a deflection, though, and Ederson recovers it easily.

56′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

Jesus shot reversed

Another good job, again involving McAtee, finds Gabriel Jesus cutting inside and shooting on goal.

The keeper needs two attempts to grab it.

54′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

nice move

James McAtee has already displayed some great touches and assists for the first time. As City move in and out of the Sporting defence, they back into the path of Gabriel Jesus in the area, but a defender comes back just in time to clear

52′ – City 0-0 SportingSimon Bajkowski

Brilliant start from McAtee

McAtee is pinned down and links well down the left with Zinchenko.

City’s best chance to score is probably still Mahrez, although he is much more clinical than the rest of his team-mates.

47′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

No goal – offside

Jesus was ruled offside. It was very close, but it won’t hold.

45′ – City 1-0 SportingJoe Bray

Jesus scores!

A goal!

Riyad Mahrez takes a cross ball from the sky, falls to the surface after a few good touches and a few deflections, before feeding Gabriel Jesus.

He gets to the near post, but VAR checks for offside.

45′ – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

back in progress

Looks like McAtee started in Foden’s position, with Mahrez on the right and Jesus moving to the left.

HT – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

Teams retreat

Two changes for City.

Riyad Mahrez replaces Bernardo Silva and James McAtee replaces Phil Foden.

HT – City 0-0 SportingJoe Bray

Some statistics

City had 66% possession, four shots (two on target) from Sporting’s nil and completed 338 of the visitor’s 147 passes.

Sporting looked like they could be a threat during the break, but not enough to score five goals in 45 minutes.

The main question is can City score a goal after the break to kill the draw once and for all, before they start bringing in some of the youngsters on the bench?

In the other game

As we have been deprived of any meaningful action at the Etihad, as expected, there is a cracker going on in the other Champions League game tonight.

Paris Saint-Germain took a 1-0 lead against Real Madrid tonight, and they overtook it in the first half at the Bernabeu thanks to another goal from Kylian Mbappe. Real, however, are far from outdone, despite the aggregate score of 2-0.
