Liverpool are set to beat Arsenal in their pursuit of FC Porto starlet Fabio Vieira this summer.
According to Sunday Mirror (h/t HITC), Liverpool have landed a first opt-out on Fabio Vieira. The FC Porto star has attracted a lot of attention due to his impressive performances in the Portuguese top flight and is seen as the next big thing to come out of the club’s youth academy.
Liverpool and Arsenal are two of the English clubs that closely followed Vieira. But it looks like Liverpool have the upper hand thanks to their close relationship with FC Porto. They have negotiated a first-refusal option which means the Reds will have the opportunity to act first on Vieira’s potential departure from Porto.
An attacking midfielder by trade, Vieira has been part of FC Porto’s academy since 2008. He rose through the ranks to receive promotion to the first team in the summer of 2020 before finally enjoying his professional breakthrough in the 2020/21 season. . campaign.
While the 21-year-old played only a minor role for Porto last season, he has become a much bigger first-team figure in the current campaign. With six goals and 14 assists in just 27 league appearances, he has been the best playmaker in the Portuguese top flight this season.

Vieira impressed the spectators with his ability to create chances in the final third, coupled with his dynamism and his talent for scoring important goals. His contributions were essential in helping Porto reclaim the league title, and it could only be a matter of time before he joined a top club.
Although Fabio Vieira’s contract at FC Porto does not expire until 2025, he has a release clause worth around £12.7million. While any club is in a position to match that figure, Liverpool have negotiated a clause which would require Porto to consult the Reds first before accepting any further offers.
This should give the Merseyside giants a massive boost, giving them a valuable safety net to sign a playmaker, especially if they miss top targets such as Carlos Soler, who is valued at £40m. euros per Valencia.
The move is a blow to Arsenal, however, as they hope to add more quality options to their attacking unit this summer. With Nicolas Pepe on the starting line, a versatile player like Vieira can be a handy signing, while adding more creativity to their midfield unit alongside Martin Odegaard. But, it looks like Liverpool have the upper hand in the race for the 21-year-old.
Liverpool have already had huge success doing business with FC Porto in January, bringing in Luis Diaz. There’s no reason Fabio Vieira can’t follow in the Colombian’s footsteps as he looks to take the next step in his career this summer.
