Klopp happy with his return to Jota
Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Diogo Jota yesterday, after the leader netted his 14th Premier League goal of the season to help Liverpool to a vital 2-0 win over Watford at Anfield.
The Portugal international has been a huge success following his £41million transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020, scoring 33 goals in 70 appearances.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Klopp said: “It’s always been clear that Diogo is not a pure winger; Diogo is a striker who can defend on the wing and play on the wing – both wings.
“Thank goodness he played for us in all three positions up front and always did very well. Today in a game like this it’s really important that the boys play the game and not the position. It means you have to find yourself in these kind of situations where you sometimes struggle if you are a little too static. It was a very fluid situation where Joey was high, got the ball, a great cross, but then s ‘there is nobody [there] it is always the same cross without result. It was a great goal, absolutely.
“He’s that guy and that was, of course, always in him, but I’ve said that a few times now, at Wolves he had a different job and he did that job so well that we thought: “We want it. ‘ Since he arrived, he has improved a lot. It’s a bit at his age, he’s growing step by step into the role of a world-class striker.
“He delivers for Portugal quite consistently, which is a tough job to do there with all the attacking talent they have.
“So, in fact, he’s the player we thought he would be – and even a bit better.”
