Liverpool must loan out Joe Gomez if they want a La Liga star

Liverpool must loan out Joe Gomez if they want to bring Ronald Araujo from Barcelona. The Reds can have a very bright future.

It looks like Liverpool want to sign Ronald Araujo. That’s according to Catalunya Radio – however, the links between the two have been around for some time.

But now the suggestion is that Liverpool have made a big offer for the 23-year-old. Enough for the outlet to call it a ‘multiple’ of Barcelona’s offer to their player.

Xavi’s side risk losing Araujo in 2023 for nothing when his contract expires, hence Liverpool’s offer. They will see an opportunity to bring him on the cheap this summer, forcing Barcelona into a sale. At least, we imagine that’s the plan.

But this raises an interesting question. Liverpool already have four ‘world-class’ centre-backs, in the words of Jurgen Klopp, so why sign a fifth? We see a clear positive in a long-term partnership alongside Ibrahima Konaté. But things would certainly seem crowded at the moment.

And that’s why we think Joe Gomez could leave Liverpool. But it is better that it is loaned.

Joe Gomez and his future at Liverpool

We love Gomez and consider him an elite centre-back. He’s just struggling to find regular matches at Liverpool at the moment, with all the centre-back’s incredible talent.

The best XI is already NOT going to the 2022 World Cup

His terrible injury at the end of 2020 – not the first of his career – set Gomez back considerably. Only two years ago, however, he was a regular starter in a dominant team and winner of the title. This player still exists.

But without regular football, Gomez won’t maintain anything like this. Ideally, he would gradually play more and more games over this season and the next, establishing himself again. Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are now over 30, after all – Gomez and Konate will take their place.

We could definitely see Matip retire in 2023, for example. In some ways, Araujo’s move would therefore come too soon – 2023 replacing the Cameroonian would be perfection.

If it’s this summer, however, then Gomez should be the only one to make way. Not permanently but on loan, preferably within the Premier League. He desperately needs regular football right now in a team that can keep him on track. Liverpool may be that club in a year or two, but probably not next season.

Gomez’s future remains very bright though – if he gets what he needs.
