Wales manager Rob Page says captain Gareth Bale needs to play regularly at club level if he is to perform at his best for Wales at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar .
“He understands what he has to do. Gareth’s problems in the past were when he wasn’t playing week after week,” Page said at a press conference on Tuesday.
“There was the match against Belarus when he was undercooked at camp and ended up having a little calf injury, so he understands he has to play.
“That will be his plan. I’m not lying when I say I have no idea what he’s doing. I haven’t had that conversation yet.
“It’s up to him and his family to decide what’s best for him to put him in the right frame of mind for November.
“It’s going to be as simple as that. It could even be as short term as that. He worked very hard throughout his career. He is the ultimate professional and he has earned the right to lead our country in a World Cup.
“Everything he does until then is really important for him to get in top physical condition.”
Bale is a free agent and his contract with Real Madrid expires this summer.
