Leeds United and Fulham interested in Manchester United outcast Phil Jones

Phil Jones is a target for Leeds United and Fulham as Erik ten Hag is reportedly ready to take out the injury-prone Manchester United defender.

According to Fichajes, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is ready to drop Phil Jones from his squad this summer as the defender continues to attract interest. Fulham and Leeds United are interested in signing the Englishman as they see him as a high-quality team option.

Phil Jones’ once-promising career has been hampered by injuries that have kept him on the sidelines of this Manchester United side for years. As a result, the centre-back has managed just six Premier League appearances in his last three seasons, while missing the entire 2020/21 season.

Much criticism was leveled at then-coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for keeping the defender in the squad and handing him a new contract. The Norwegian had cited injury problems for his lack of playing time. Last campaign, he started just two games and came on as a substitute twice.

In the summer, things could change for Jones as Manchester United could accept offers for the 30-year-old, who is not part of new manager Erik ten Hag’s plans to bring in a new defender.

Several Premier League sides are keen to sign Jones this summer as they see him as a quality depth option, with Fulham and Leeds United reportedly keen to bring the experienced centre-back into their squad next season.

Marco Silva’s newly promoted side are keen to add cheap players to their side as they embark on a season where their sole aim is to survive in the top flight. A player of Jones’ experience could prove crucial to that cause. The former Blackburn defender may not be considered a starting option, although he would add a lot of skill and depth to the squad.

Leeds United could challenge Fulham as Jesse Marsch looks to add players who could help strengthen the defence. The Whites have been terrible defensively over the past season, and adding a player of Jones’ qualities could help them add an extra layer of protection, provided he stays fit.

Manchester United would like at least 4 million euros from suitors. However, the defender’s terrible injury record and lack of playing time over the past three seasons will be addressed in negotiations as clubs such as Fulham and Leeds United will seek to secure him for less or perhaps even on a free transfer.
