Jamie Carragher praises Liverpool v Benfica, 22

Jamie Carragher says Ibrahima Konate had a “bright start” to his career at Liverpool after scoring in back-to-back Champions League appearances, as he told CBS Sports (4/13/22 at 10:30 p.m.) .

On Wednesday night, Liverpool drew 3-3 against Benfica in the second leg of their Champions League showdown, with Carragher pointing out Konate scored “exactly the same goal” he scored in the opener.

It was another powerful header from the 22-year-old and another excellent performance from the club’s summer signing.

Much has been said about Luis Diaz’s impact since January, but Konate has been just as important for the Reds.

Konate is perhaps Liverpool’s first change at centre-back as Carragher has praised the player.

“Konate scored the exact same goal in the first leg,” Carragher said. “Nicolas Otamendi in the back of the net, as always.

“Brilliant start from this lad and he’s been brilliant ever since he really got into the Liverpool team.”

Interestingly, Jurgen Klopp plays Konate ahead of Joe Gomez at centre-back when he makes a substitution.

In previous years, Gomez could argue that he was the main guy alongside Virgil Van Dijk.

This long-term injury last season hasn’t helped the Englishman’s cause as he is now behind Joel Matip, as well as Konate.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Gomez parts ways with the Reds this summer, so he can earn those regular starts.
