Ilkay Gundogan’s contract with Manchester City set to end in 15 months but Sky Blues are keen to tie him down with a new deal amid interest from LaLiga giants Santander Barcelona.
The German international was Pep Guardiolafirst signing at Manchester City in 2016, when the Catalan coach urged the club to acquire his services as Borussia Dortmund.
According to Daily Star, Barcelona are among the teams who have set their sights on the 31-year-old midfielder, who is not considered an undisputed starter in midfield this season at the Sky Blues. Despite this, they report that he should stay at the Etihad.
Gundogan has started in 15 Premier League games so far, scoring five goals and providing three assists in his sixth season under Guardiola.
Should Manchester City does not renew his contract in the next few months, they risk losing him on a free transfer in 2023.
Gundogan won three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, up to four Carabao Cups and two Community Shield trophies with Manchester City.
He also helped Sky Blues reach the Champions League final last season, where they lost 1-0 to Thomas Tuchelit’s chelsea.
