Fabinho talks about the coach who changed his career

Leonardo Jardim, Fabinho’s coach at Monaco, made a bold positioning decision with the Brazilian early in his career – and Liverpool are reaping the rewards.

While the Reds would say Fabinho is one of the best in the world at his position, being a defensive midfielder wasn’t always the plan. Talk to FourFourTwo Recently, Fabinho explained how his current role has come to be: the best of t

He was a very important coach in my career. My first season with him in Monaco [2014-15]I always played mostly as a full-back, but within a few games he started pushing me into midfield.

I remember he asked me during pre-season if I had ever played there and I told him yes, so he played me there in a friendly and I was the best player in the field.

Then, before the start of the 2016-17 season, Jardim called me to chat and said: “Look, I’ve signed Djibril Sidibé to play you – from now on, I want you to play as a defensive midfielder. .’

Considering my situation with the national team, plus the small group of top quality full-backs, I thought this was a negative change.

It was hard. Everyone knew me as a full-back and I was a national team regular there – my agents, and I guess I started with myself, weren’t happy with the situation at all. I accepted the challenge because I knew I could adapt.

Looking back, however, it was a life-changing moment. Jardim helped me a lot and that season we won the Ligue 1 title and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. I was in the shape of my life and ended up moving to Liverpool as a midfielder.

It definitely turned out to be the right decision.
