Erik ten Hag explained how Manchester United will use substitutes, the difference between opponents and United’s fanbase in his pre-match interview ahead of his side facing Melbourne Victory.
After confirming his line-up, the Dutchman once again left with a solid XI, perhaps showing that he wants these players to gel in his system as soon as possible.
“Liverpool is, of course, a name, it’s a rival and the players are very motivated.” Ten Hag told MUTV ahead of the match.
“But it’s a different number, I know the Australians are tough and will ask everything of us. So we have to be good to give a good performance and we want to define the next step.
“The opponent will be different, we don’t know him, he will be compact and we can’t wait.
“Under these circumstances, we have to take the next step.”
He was then asked if he would continue his substitution strategy he implemented against Liverpool.
The manager swapped the entire squad at half-time in that encounter.
“It will be the same.” He replied, before explaining why. “[We want] to build season and fitness levels, but to do so very cautiously. We want to keep everyone fit, but we also want everyone to develop the right level of fitness for matches.”
Then, finally, Ten Hag was again asked about United’s incredible fan base.
He expressed his shock at the global support for the club.
“We’ve had the experience for the past few days here. People are so excited, like in Thailand.
“When you’re on the other side of the world you can hardly believe it. But, it’s the truth, Manchester United are a big club, with a big fanbase and we have supporters all over the world.”
Ten Hag will want to kick off the season as soon as possible so he can experience the Old Trafford vibe.
