Cristiano Ronaldo: Where could the Portuguese star go this summer if he leaves Manchester United?

After returning to Old Trafford last summer, Cristiano Ronaldo’s second appearance at Manchester United hasn’t exactly gone to plan.

Although he finished as the club’s top scorer, a sixth-place finish and no progress in cup competitions ended a miserable season for the Red Devils. Now the 37-year-old star is said to be unhappy with United’s lack of activity in the transfer market this summer, with new boss Erik ten Hag yet to bring anyone on.

With the Portuguese reportedly considering leaving the club, Sportsmail are looking at Ronaldo’s options this summer should he look elsewhere and opt for a new challenge.

BAYERN MUNICH

After signing Sadio Mane from Liverpool for £35.1m, the Bundesliga champions are reportedly considering signing another attacking Premier League star in Ronaldo.

Bayern is, according to the Spanish outlet ASlooking into the possibility of signing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, with a pretty big take – only if Robert Lewandowski leaves.

The Pole has made his desire to leave Germany – Barcelona being the most likely destination – very obvious and the report details that Ronaldo is on their target list should their star striker leave as planned.

What is the challenge for Ronaldo? Well, after winning titles in England, Spain and Italy, ticking Germany off the list and playing in a new league would no doubt attract the Portugal captain.

Also playing alongside Mane, Ronaldo would be another star in a star-studded team and despite his domestic dominance, the target of winning the Champions League after Bayern’s shock quarter-final exit at Villarreal last season.

Of course, currently Ronaldo will not feature in Europe’s top club competition next season after United only managed to qualify for the Europa League.

JUVENTUS

A return… followed by another?

Ronaldo’s desire to leave Juventus at the end of last summer’s transfer window came as a shock. A return to Turin would be a bigger surprise.

Ronaldo won two Serie A titles with Juventus in three years at the Old Lady from 2018 to 2021

spanish paper sport report that Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is trying to negotiate a return to the Old Lady, where Ronaldo spent three years after leaving Real Madrid in 2018.

The motivation of the player himself would be clear: despite winning two Serie A titles, Ronaldo could not guide Juve to that coveted Champions League trophy, after disappointing outings at Ajax , Lyons and Porto.

He would also likely be joined by Paul Pogba, who is set to move to Juve after his contract at United expires in the summer.

Going back to Italy would be a surprise. But finishing what he started at Juve and aiming for another European crown would be an obvious challenge to see Ronaldo’s illustrious career.

When you talk about fairy tale moves, that’s top of the pile.

Ronaldo joined Sporting Lisbon aged 12, leaving the island of Madeira for the Portuguese capital as he began his journey to stardom.

At the age of 17, Ronaldo made his first-team debut in 2002, and rumors quickly swirled about a move abroad.

He moved to United a year later after impressing in a pre-season friendly against the Red Devils.

As Sporting won the Portuguese title in 2021, a return to where it all began was mooted last summer amid Ronaldo’s dissatisfaction at Juve.

Although that never materialized, it’s possible Ronaldo will return home this summer to see his fascinating playing days – and add to those 31 appearances and five goals from 20 years ago.

MLS

The most unlikely option, it must be said. Ronaldo doesn’t strike you as the player who would love an American swan song.

However, he wouldn’t be the first and he won’t be the last to see his playing days in the United States. From a marketing perspective, off the pitch, a few years in Hollywood, Miami or New York would be extremely attractive for Ronaldo.

The likes of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all tried out in the United States, before returning to Europe to replay or manage.

Los Angeles FC, LA Galaxy, Inter Miami and New York City FC would be potential suitors, should Ronaldo see his near future away from Europe.
