Chelsea and Liverpool take advantage of Real Madrid in pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni
According to Marca (h/t Metro), Chelsea and Liverpool could now have the upper hand over Real Madrid in the race to sign Aurélien Tchouameni in the next summer transfer window. The Spanish champions seem happy with their current midfielders and have opted to postpone the signing of the Monaco midfielder until at least next season.
The French international is considered one of the best midfielders in Europe. He has scored three goals and made one assist in 33 French Ligue 1 appearances. This represents a decent return for a player who thrives in the defensive midfield role.
His popularity grew after a series of excellent performances for club and country. Tchouameni made his senior debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina last September before earning his first start against Ukraine. He had previously represented his country at all youth levels, from Under-16 to Under-21.
He’s in no rush for the transfer as he still has a few years left in his contract at Monaco and is ready for the move when the right time is right. He opened up about his future and, according to Metro, declined to reveal much about his future plans.
“I am under contract here until 2024 with an option until 2025. We will see what the future holds for me”
Do Chelsea need a midfielder?
With Real Madrid out of the running and only Liverpool a serious contender, Chelsea have a good chance of signing the young French superstar from Monaco. But do we need a midfielder now?
There has been speculation over the departure of the midfield duo of N’Golo Kante and Jorghinho amid a potential summer exodus. In this case, Tchouameni would perfectly replace Kante.
But things are looking up now that likely new owners have been announced, and Kante could stay. Either way, the 22-year-old will be a good addition to the squad considering Kante is getting older and has looked tired in our last games.
More Chelsea news
Given Chelsea’s defensive frailty in recent games, particularly the one against Wolves last Saturday, we may need to consider adding a talented defensive midfielder to improve the defence. Aurelian can contribute to this as he has already established himself as a great defensive midfielder in the French league, helping Monaco to a third-place finish last season and winning the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award and also qualifying for the Ligue 1 team of the season.
It’s good news that Madrid are out of the running and we have a better chance of signing the midfielder. But we need to move quickly to complete the deal as Liverpool have moved forward slightly due to our ownership crisis.
