Charlie Austin says there are two signings he still wants Liverpool to make

Charlie Austin wants Liverpool to sign two more midfielders in this summer’s transfer market.

speaking on TalkSPORT, the former Premier League striker claimed the Reds could still be looking for some light to hunt down Manchester City. According to Austin, the burden on Darwin Nunez to replace Sadio Mane is currently too heavy.

“It’s a big ask to replace him (Mane),” Austin said. “Nunez came to replace him and he needs to hit the ground immediately. Liverpool can’t afford to drop points or start slow compared to Man City. They just signed Haaland who is arguably the best centre-forward in the world right now, so it’s going to be interesting.

In order to combat a potentially slow start for their new £64million leader, Austin would also like to see Liverpool strengthen in midfield.

“I would like them to sign two midfielders as well, to strengthen there too,” said the QPR striker.

Liverpool midfielder debate rages on

Many Liverpool supporters will nod in agreement with Austin. Whether or not the Reds need to improve their midfield options is certainly a hot topic right now. There are one or two players on fans’ wish lists.

It seems the powers that be at Anfield are also in agreement that the position does indeed need an upgrade. However, perhaps unlike many supporters, they are happy to wait another year until they pull the trigger on any target.

It’s a strategy that has served Liverpool well over the years. Instead of opting for a potential “provisional” signing, FSG prefers to wait for the “right player”.

In the short term, it remains to be seen whether this will cost Liverpool the coming season.

So far, Jurgen Klopp hasn’t lost any member of his cohort from last season. Between the seven or eight options he has in the middle of the park, they managed to push Liverpool forward in their quadruple quest until the very end of last campaign.

For this reason, they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

It could of course be that Liverpool are simply employing strategy in the market with their pretty public statement that business is over.

Perhaps a new face will still be wandering around the AXA Training Center to complete Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. One thing is pretty certain though, Austin surely won’t get his wish for two new faces.
