Bayer Leverkusen open talks with Arsenal for Granit Xhaka

Bayer Leverkusen are said to be discussing the signing of Granit Xhaka in the window, as Arsenal eye Youri Tielemans.

According to the print edition of the Sunday People, relayed by The Boot Room, Bayer Leverkusen are targeting a transfer for Granit Xhaka and have held discussions with Arsenal to explore a possible transfer. Although Arsenal don’t really need to consider a sale of the midfielder, their pursuit of Youri Tielemans may suggest they could be open to the possibility.

Granit Xhaka has consistently split Arsenal’s fanbase to the point that many sections of the public want him to leave the club. Still, the managers he played with at the Emirates trusted his abilities as the Swiss captain has been a permanent fixture in the starting XI for the past five seasons.

Last summer, Xhaka nearly left Arsenal amid strong interest from Roma. However, the Italians never agreed a fee with the Premier League side, and the Swiss international remained at the club, signing a new three-year deal. Manager Mikel Arteta relied heavily on the midfielder throughout the season as Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League and secured a place in the UEFA Europa League.

Speculation around Xhaka’s possible departure has been growing lately, but the midfielder recently reiterated his commitment to Arsenal and insisted he can see his contract.

However, Arteta and Arsenal are keen to add another midfielder in place of Xhaka and are in pole position to sign Youri Tielemans. The Gunners want to complete the Belgian superstar’s transfer once the international break is over and then look to sign a striker.

Tielemans’ lawsuit has opened the way to speculation about Xhaka’s future. It has been suggested that the Swiss midfielder could move on, with Roma once again showing interest. Now Bayer Leverkusen are also in the running to sign the midfielder and have reportedly opened talks with Arsenal to explore the possibility of a move.

Bayer Leverkusen have representatives in London as they seek to bring Xhaka back to the Bundesliga. However, it’s still unclear if the midfielder would be open to a return to the German top flight. The 29-year-old has no reason to leave Arsenal and could stay at the club for the upcoming season.

Arsenal have also protected Xhaka’s value by handing him the new contract, and they could demand a substantial fee from suitors should they decide to part ways with him. However, Arteta likes the former Gunners skipper and will look to keep him at the club, while adding competition to the job with the possible arrival of Tielemans.
