While on international duty with England Under-21 in March, Spence spoke of his desire to play in the top flight. He said: “I always want to push myself and play with the best players and the best team. Of course it’s one of my ambitions to play in the Premier League. I try to keep a cool head. I don’t read too much in it.
“At the end of the day, I’m just here to enjoy my football. I have to stay focused, have a narrow view and play well on the pitch.”
Being doubted by Warnock, who left Middlesbrough shortly after Spence left on loan, is not Spence’s only setback. He had previously been released by Fulham and has opened up about his difficult journey in football.
“It was hard. But I never worry, really. I know my abilities, I know what I am capable of. I have a good family behind me who push me and guide me,” he continued. “I just have to keep moving forward and the opportunities will always present themselves. So I have to be ready to take them.
