Arsenal and Newcastle United lead Manchester United in race for Napoli star Fabian Ruiz
According to the Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (h/t The Sun), Arsenal and Newcastle United lead Manchester United in the race to sign Napoli star Fabian Ruiz in the summer transfer window. His future is up for grabs at the moment which has seen him linked with a move elsewhere ahead of next season.
Ruiz will see his current contract with the Serie A club expire at the end of the next campaign. Napoli are ready to sell him this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer in the future. They have named a £25.8million price tag for his services, with Premier League sides circling to get their hands on the midfielder.
Man United are one of them, but they have been dealt a blow as Newcastle and the Gunners are currently frontrunners in this pursuit. Manchester City are also considering targeting the Spain international which makes up for some interesting weeks ahead in this transfer window.
Can Man Utd make transfers?
The 26-year-old is on the back of another impressive season with the Italian side, having become a key player for them since joining them in 2018. He had shown huge potential even during his days at Real Betis and has now become a superstar in its own right now.
The Serie A ace had seven goals and four assists in 38 appearances in all competitions the previous campaign. He played a major role in helping his team mount a challenge for the Scudetto title for much of this season.
Being in the early years of his playing career, Ruiz would no doubt boost our midfield which has dwindled with the starts we’ve had this summer. This could explain why we are targeting reinforcements in midfield to try to support Erik ten Hag in the transfer market.
Ruiz’s current valuation is indeed a massive theft, so it would be wise for the Manchester club to actively pursue the central midfielder this summer. Now that Paul Pogba has left Old Trafford, his exit has left a gaping hole in midfield that has undermined our creative presence in the center of the pitch.
Ruiz can be a great signing to negate that, and one could even argue that he’s a far more attractive prospect than Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. We’ve been chasing the latter for a while and haven’t made much progress in terms of signing.

Barca value de Jong at around £89m which is a pretty high amount to say the least. One could raise questions against our transfer plans for this reason, especially with the estimated budget of £100-150m.
